"I got a few complaints after my Wednesday column when I joked that there must be some NHS workers who weren't 'Arab terrorists.' I hope readers would not have thought for one second that I meant a slur on all Arabs by using that phrase, any more than I would have meant a slur on all white people if I had used the phrase 'white supremacist morons', or football fans if I'd used the phrase 'football hooligans', or all teenagers if I had used the phrase 'teenage thugs'. But if normal, peaceful Arab people living in Britain were upset, I apologise."

Though the democratically elected Palestinian President is a Fatah member, the government in question contained no one from Fatah. It was formed by a Hamas prime minister and approved by the parliament, consisting predominantly of Hamas MPs. Fatah lost the last parliamentary elections and joined a national unity government only through negotiations with Hamas."

July 19 - AMW adviser Chris Doyle got a letter published in the Jewish Chronicle:

"The issue of rising antisemitism as was a thoroughly worthwhile issue for a Channel 4 documentary. Sadly the choice of messenger seriously undermined the credibility of the message. Richard Littlejohn has been the high priest of prejudice against so many groups including the French, the Germans, Arabs, Muslims, Africans, gypsies and gays. He has alienated so many communities that surely it raises questions about the validity and effectiveness of cooperating with such a disgraceful individual, and begs the question why Channel 4 could not find a more credible alternative.

"I was shocked to read Richard Littlejohn's characterisation of the two main branches of Islam, implying that neither is 'peace-loving.' One might as well describe Christians as being 'behind the IRA and the Ku Klux Klan.' Muslims who commit violent acts are not at all representative of the vast majority of the 1.3 billion Muslims worldwide. And Hamas isn't a Shia organisation: it is composed entirely of Sunni Muslims."

Justin Alexander, Christian Peacemaker Teams

"Only around 20 per cent of the world's Shia population are followers of the Qom leadership in Iran. Around 70 per cent follow the supreme religious authority in Najaf in Iraq, known for its political moderation. Grand Ayatollah Al-Sistani, the current religious authority in Najaf, is an active proponent of democracy who has issued fatwas calling on Iraqi Shias not to retaliate against Sunni extremist violence. Sunnism is defined not by the Saudi government but by the Al-Ahzar University in Egypt. The Imam of Al-Azhar, Muhamad Sayid Tantawy, condemned outright the 9/11 attacks, declaring that the terrorists were 'heretics.' He has travelled the world with his call for the eradication of terrorism, particularly Al-Qaeda's practice of kidnapping and killing civilians. The vast majority of Sunnis and Shias the world over aren't under the direction of any government or terrorist group, but follow religious authorities that condemn terrorism."
