ACTION ALERT: THANK THE TIMES!!!
Thursday, November 27, 2003 (523 reads)

The British media has been thoroughly reporting and commenting on claims of rising anti-Semitism in Europe, but has largely failed to highlight the reasons for such claims (namely the suppression of legitimate criticism of Israel) or challenge their resultant spuriousness. For a prime example, see our Action Alert on Tuesday against the Guardian.

Which is why we should all take a minute to thank the Times for a rational, intelligent commentary entitled "Anti-Semitism is not the real danger to Jews today" by Mark Mazower, Professor of History at Birkbeck College London. As the newspaper's editorial line is traditionally pro-Israeli, it is all the more important to show our appreciation for publishing a rare and much-needed change of outlook.

THANK THE TODAY PROGRAMME ON BBC RADIO 4!!!
Thursday, November 27, 2003 (597 reads)

There was an excellent interview with the mother of Tom Hurndall, the British peace activist shot in the head by an Israeli soldier in April, on the Today programme this morning (October 27).

She talks about the fabrications and leniency of Israeli military investigations into deaths, as well as her own problems trying to get an enquiry into the shooting of her son.

On the Saturday morning Today programme, they read out correspondence they have received from the week's programmes. If we can get enough people to say thanks, it is more likely that they will read one or more sympathetic letters. If we do not and members of the pro-Israel lobby write in, they will read out one of their letters.

WRITE TO THE FINANCIAL TIMES
Wednesday, November 26, 2003 (552 reads)

An interesting, thought-provoking  comment in yesterday's FT by Dr Mustapha Barghouti who says the Palestinians need free elections. They can only have them if they have free movement. The policies of criticising the P.A. whilst not allowing elections to take place play into the hands of those who do not wish to see a solution.

You are encouraged to read the comment, in full below, and write to the FT with your opinion. This is an interesting debate, so get involved, and tell them what you think. We should thank the FT for providing a platform for a variety of opinions on the Israeli Palestinian problem.

COMPLAIN TO THE GUARDIAN!!!
Tuesday, November 25, 2003 (1059 reads)

The Guardian's usually excellent reporter Chris McGreal has written a deeply offensive article in the newspaper's November 25 edition, entitled "The 'new' anti-semitism: is Europe in grip of worst bout of hatred since the Holocaust?"

While anti-Semitism (against Jews and Arabs) should be strongly condemned, the article consists of paragraph after paragraph of baseless allegations by Jewish and Israeli leaders against Europe's Muslims, stating that their existence, growth and influence on the continent is a threat to Jews (weren't these excuses used to perpetrate and justify the Holocaust?), and repeating the tired old myth that criticism of Israel is actually just anti-Semitism.

Of the article's 31 paragraphs, only the last 4 (quoting just 1 source, an Israeli) cast doubt on the allegations made by 7 specific sources as well as general references to Israeli and Jewish opinion. Absolutely no attempt to get a Muslim or Arab view - poor, lazy journalism. The article ends with examples of anti-Jewish attacks in Europe, though on all but one occasion the perpetrators are unknown. The article, masquerading as an insight into anti-Semitism, is in fact almost unquestioningly Islamophobic and driven by sources with specific political agendas.

About

Action Alerts are issued no more than twice a week, in response to particularly good or bad reporting of Arab issues. They are designed to hone, galvanise and focus the lobbying capability of members and the public, and thus our effectiveness, where and when it is most needed. They are also suited to those who do not have time to engage the media everyday.
