COMPLAIN TO MELANIE PHILLIPS & THE DAILY MAIL!!!
Monday, May 16, 2005 (1143 reads)

Please complain to the Daily Mail and regular columnist Melanie Phillips over a May 16 commentary on BBC bias which, as usual for the writer, provides an opportunity to blindingly praise Israel and condemn Arabs.

Given that the Mail reported nothing today on yesterday's 57th anniversary of the dispossession of around 750,000 Palestinians, resulting in the loss of their homeland and a refugee crisis of millions to this day, this is particularly insensitive for the Mail and Phillips.

It takes some nerve for someone so partial in her views of the Arab-Israeli conflict to blame the BBC for anti-Israel bias. One should remind her of the work of Glasgow University's Greg Philo and Mike Berry, whose thorough study of BBC output showed a blatant pro-Israel bias.

THANK THE SUNDAY TIMES & DANIEL DAY-LEWIS!!!
Thursday, March 24, 2005 (713 reads)

Please take a minute to thank the Sunday Times and Daniel Day-Lewis for an excellent article in the March 20 edition entitled "Inside scarred minds", in which the renowned actor, on his first visit to the Gaza Strip, meets Palestinian families living in conflict and the psychologists who are counselling them.

Our thanks and support are all the more important because the Zionist Federation has today urged its members to complain about the article, which it described as "very unpleasant". We must not allow the newspaper or celebrity to be silenced, as this will discourage other high-profile figures from speaking out.

THANK THE GUARDIAN & COMPLAIN TO THE BBC!!!
Saturday, March 05, 2005 (637 reads)

Please thank the Guardian for an excellent commentary in its March 4 edition by London mayor Ken Livingstone entitled "This is about Israel, not anti-semitism". He condemns Israeli policies against the Palestinians, supports refugees' rights and describes Ariel Sharon as a war criminal. This has caused uproar among pro-Israel lobbyists, so he should be thanked for his staunch support for human rights and justice, and the Guardian should be thanked for publishing the commentary.

Also, please complain to BBC Radio 4's Today programme for a very misleading item on illegal Jewish settlements on March 3 at 8.30am, in which Israeli Housing Minister Isaac Herzogg was allowed to speak unchallenged almost 9 times longer than Afif Safieh, Palestinian general delegate to the UK and Holy See.

COMPLAIN TO 'TODAY' & WATCH GREAT DOCUMENTARIES!!!
Sunday, August 15, 2004 (653 reads)

'Today' is the flagship programme of the BBC with the highest audience figures on Radio 4. It consistently does not address Palestinian concerns, and sometimes is less critical of Israel than the current US administration in an election year. It reports issues that are of concern to Israel, or reports issues that are of importance to Palestinians totally from an Israeli perspective. It avoids the word 'occupation' but uses 'security barrier', a term favoured by Israel and disputed by Palestinians.

On the other hand, this coming week the BBC is showing must-see documentaries on Iraq, Israel/Palestine and Al Jazeera.

SUPPORT LIBERAL DEMOCRAT MP JENNY TONGE!!!
Tuesday, January 27, 2004 (580 reads)

AMW urges its members and the public to bolster the pressure on Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy, who is reportedly facing internal calls and a petition - from deputy chairman Donnachadh McCarthy among others - to reverse his decision on Friday to sack Dr. Jenny Tonge from the party's front bench.

"Tonge simply acknowledged that the intolerable daily suffering of the Palestinians, which she has seen first-hand, can lead to the hopelessness and anger that may push someone to become a suicide bomber. This is not a show of support for suicide bombings, and she has said so publicly," said AMW director Sharif Hikmat Nashashibi.

"Dr. Tonge was not trying to elicit sympathy for suicide bombers. She was attempting to explain their actions, for without understanding there can be no hope of achieving peace and justice in the Middle East," said AMW executive committee member Georgina Baidoun in a letter published in the Daily Mirror on January 26.

"Therefore," added Nashashibi, "her sacking sends out the message that Kennedy is unwilling to even recognise the plight of the Palestinians, let alone speak out against it. Which is the worse offense?"

Please show Kennedy your support for a brave MP who has dared to speak out. You may even like to suggest that he sees for himself the suffering to which he seems indifferent.

ACTION ALERT: THANK THE TIMES!!!
Thursday, November 27, 2003 (504 reads)

The British media has been thoroughly reporting and commenting on claims of rising anti-Semitism in Europe, but has largely failed to highlight the reasons for such claims (namely the suppression of legitimate criticism of Israel) or challenge their resultant spuriousness. For a prime example, see our Action Alert on Tuesday against the Guardian.

Which is why we should all take a minute to thank the Times for a rational, intelligent commentary entitled "Anti-Semitism is not the real danger to Jews today" by Mark Mazower, Professor of History at Birkbeck College London. As the newspaper's editorial line is traditionally pro-Israeli, it is all the more important to show our appreciation for publishing a rare and much-needed change of outlook.

WRITE TO THE FINANCIAL TIMES
Wednesday, November 26, 2003 (537 reads)

An interesting, thought-provoking  comment in yesterday's FT by Dr Mustapha Barghouti who says the Palestinians need free elections. They can only have them if they have free movement. The policies of criticising the P.A. whilst not allowing elections to take place play into the hands of those who do not wish to see a solution.

You are encouraged to read the comment, in full below, and write to the FT with your opinion. This is an interesting debate, so get involved, and tell them what you think. We should thank the FT for providing a platform for a variety of opinions on the Israeli Palestinian problem.

COMPLAIN TO THE GUARDIAN!!!
Tuesday, November 25, 2003 (1033 reads)

The Guardian's usually excellent reporter Chris McGreal has written a deeply offensive article in the newspaper's November 25 edition, entitled "The 'new' anti-semitism: is Europe in grip of worst bout of hatred since the Holocaust?"

While anti-Semitism (against Jews and Arabs) should be strongly condemned, the article consists of paragraph after paragraph of baseless allegations by Jewish and Israeli leaders against Europe's Muslims, stating that their existence, growth and influence on the continent is a threat to Jews (weren't these excuses used to perpetrate and justify the Holocaust?), and repeating the tired old myth that criticism of Israel is actually just anti-Semitism.

Of the article's 31 paragraphs, only the last 4 (quoting just 1 source, an Israeli) cast doubt on the allegations made by 7 specific sources as well as general references to Israeli and Jewish opinion. Absolutely no attempt to get a Muslim or Arab view - poor, lazy journalism. The article ends with examples of anti-Jewish attacks in Europe, though on all but one occasion the perpetrators are unknown. The article, masquerading as an insight into anti-Semitism, is in fact almost unquestioningly Islamophobic and driven by sources with specific political agendas.

THANK THE TODAY PROGRAMME ON BBC RADIO 4!!!

There was an excellent interview with the mother of Tom Hurndall, the British peace activist shot in the head by an Israeli soldier in April, on the Today programme this morning (October 27).

She talks about the fabrications and leniency of Israeli military investigations into deaths, as well as her own problems trying to get an enquiry into the shooting of her son.

On the Saturday morning Today programme, they read out correspondence they have received from the week's programmes. If we can get enough people to say thanks, it is more likely that they will read one or more sympathetic letters. If we do not and members of the pro-Israel lobby write in, they will read out one of their letters.

COMPLAIN TO BBC RE NEWSNIGHT WITH AFIF SAFIEH!!!
Wednesday, December 01, 2004 (837 reads)

Here's one more reason to attend Thursday's vigil outside the BBC, endorsed by Arab Media Watch:

There was a disgraceful Newsnight programme aired on November 30 featuring the "Diary of a Suicide Bomber". Under the pretence that he would talk about the Palestinian elections, H.E. Afif Safieh, the Palestinian General Delegate to the UK and Holy See, was asked to take part. Instead, Newsnight chose to include a piece of footage about a suicide bomber. The June 27 edition of the Metro newspaper contains two fundamentally and offensively inaccurate letters on Israel/Palestine which are easy to counter.

The letters are reproduced in full, followed by Arab Media Watch's points for rebuttal:

C Leadbeater does not appear to understand the word "fact".   The Palestinian Charter still calls for the destruction of Israel.  Hamas and other Palestinians organisations certainly do not recognise Israel''s right to exist.  Most of the Palestinian schoolbooks do not show Israel.  Israel really wants peace but this can only come about when both sides show they are serious about it.
M Ordman, middlesex

All you need is an internet connection to discover how that the PLO charter calls for the destruction of Israel.  Article 9 reads: "Armed struggle is the only way to liberate Palestine."  And articles 19 to 20 refute the right of Israel to exist: "The partition of Palestine in 1947 and the establishment of the state of Israel are entirely illegal?. The Balfour declaration? null and void."

While some of Britain's broadsheets have reacted commendably to the Winograd report on Israel's war against Lebanon in 2006, the Times published on 31 January 2008 an imflammatory commentary by Robin Shepherd entitled "A barrage against Israel."

Thank Andrew Alexander & Daily Mail!
Friday, June 22, 2007 (1292 reads)

Please take a minute to thank Daily Mail regular columnist Andrew Alexander for an excellent piece today (22 June 2007) entitled "Delving inside the mind of a suicide bomber."

Arab Media Watch has not chosen this item because of the topic of suicide bombings, but because Alexander provides legitimate criticism of Israeli, US and British policy vis-a-vis Palestine, Iraq, Lebanon, and the Arab world in general. He also highlights the plight of Palestinian and Iraqi refugees (the former in particular receiving hardly any media attention).

Incidentally, Alexander is a speaker at AMW's fundraising dinner on 8 September - all the more reason to write in!

Thank Times correspondent James Hider!
Friday, June 29, 2007 (1057 reads)

Please take a minute to thank Times correspondent James Hider for an article on 28 June 2007 entitled "Checkpoints could be first target for peacemaker Blair," which highlights arguably the most pervasive yet least reported aspect of Israel's occupation. This is particularly noteworthy in a newspaper that is editorially pro-Israel.

Thank Emma Williams & Daily Telegraph!
Wednesday, June 06, 2007 (864 reads)

Please take a moment to thank the Daily Telegraph for an excellent commentary on 6 June 2007 by Emma Williams entitled "40 years on, Israel remains a prisoner," about the legacy of the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

It is a welcome surprise to see something like this in a newspaper that is usually and traditionally pro-Israel, and comes a month after another excellent article in the Telegraph about the discrimination faced by Israel's Arab citizens, about which we also issued an Action Alert.

As such, it is very important that the newspaper knows that such content is necessary, appreciated and should continue, so please write in.

Complain to Melanie Phillips & Daily Mail!
Monday, June 04, 2007 (1802 reads)

Please complain to the Daily Mail and regular columnist Melanie Phillips about an article by her, published on 4 June 2007, entitled "A deplorable decision which shows that Britain's academic elite has taken leave of its senses."

Whatever your views on boycotting Israel, which Phillips is vehemently against and which is the opening subject of this article, she then provides woefully inaccurate, deeply offensive views on the Arab-Israeli conflict.

COMPLAIN TO THE DAILY EXPRESS, THANK GRAZIA!!!
Tuesday, June 27, 2006 (931 reads)

27 June 2006

There is an excellent article by Claire Newbon in the 26 June edition of Grazia magazine about the Israeli beach massacre in Gaza, entitled "The picnic that turned into a bloodbath". It is worth responding because Grazia does not usually delve into world politics, so we should thank and encourage them because no doubt they will come under pressure from the pro-Israel lobby. Let them not regret publishing something like this.

Write to feedback@graziamagazine.co.uk. If your letter is chosen as "letter of the week" and printed in next week's Grazia, you could win products from the Laboratoire Remede skincare range worth over £100.

On the other hand, there is an atrocious feature by Paul Callan in the Saturday June 24 edition of the Daily Express, which is almost 2 pages about British "war hero" Orde Wingate, who used his "military genius" and "brilliance as a tactician" to help Jewish forces establish "their precious homeland."

There is an absolutely atrocious commentary in today's Sun by Trevor Kavanagh entitled "Just because Israel is paranoid doesn't mean people aren't out to get it". COMPLAIN TO THE BBC OVER RACIST REMARKS!!!
Friday, July 14, 2006 (1671 reads)

14 July 2006

Please complain about an outrageous, racist comment by actress and columnist Maureen Lipman on BBC 1's This Week programme of 13 July, in which she said: "Human life is not cheap to the Israelis, and human life on the other side is quite cheap actually..."

Of the This Week team - Andrew Neil, Dianne Abbott and Michael Portillo - only Abbott responded, calling the comment "unfair", before Neil quickly moved the discussion along.

Please let the BBC know that such racism is unacceptable, and that you demand an official statement from the corporation condemning Lipman's comment and apologising for the offence caused.
