Last week, Arab Media Watch issued an Action Alert against Daily Star regular columnist Dominik Diamond's statement: "There must be some NHS staff who aren't Arab terrorists, surely?"
Diamond responded to the excellent, polite emails from AMW members, saying he was sorry, and would say so in his next column on 29 September 2007. As he stuck to his word, and was not obliged to apologise, please take a minute to thank him for doing so.
Under the title "No Slur Meant," he wrote:
"I got a few complaints after my Wednesday column when I joked that there must be some NHS workers who weren't 'Arab terrorists.' I hope readers would not have thought for one second that I meant a slur on all Arabs by using that phrase, any more than I would have meant a slur on all white people if I had used the phrase 'white supremacist morons', or football fans if I'd used the phrase 'football hooligans', or all teenagers if I had used the phrase 'teenage thugs'. But if normal, peaceful Arab people living in Britain were upset, I apologise."
