As Palestinians in Gaza continue to experience appalling death, injury and destruction at the hands of Israeli occupation forces, and as news of their plight thins out in the British media, please take a minute to thank the FT's Harvey Morris for an excellent article on October 11 entitled "Civilian toll in Gaza grows after Israeli invasion".
Following are extracts from the article, though we recommend reading it in full:

"Late last month, the Israeli army locked down the 360 sq km Gaza Strip, which, at the best of times, is described by its 1.3m inhabitants as the world's largest prison."
"...concern is growing among medical staff and human rights groups about mounting civilian casualties from Israel's invasion."
"The Palestine Centre for Human Rights, in its weekly report to October 7, listed 74 Palestinians killed in the operation, including 37 civilians, of whom 23 were children. Some 300 people were wounded. The death toll has since risen to nearer 100. In the intensive care unit at Shifa, 10 of 12 beds are occupied by victims of bullet and shrapnel wounds."
"The army says it is doing its best to avoid civilian casualties. But the nature of the weapons it is using, including tanks shells and missiles, against militants in the Jabalya refugee camp and other areas in the Gaza Strip are exacting a heavy toll on civilians who get in their way."
"The psychological trauma is also acute for all who have to endure the almost constant hum of Israel's flightless drones and the frequent appearance in the sky of Apache helicopters."
