During the week of 11-17 August 2008, Arab Media Watch issued a press release condemning Israel's inaction over the killing of Reuters cameraman Fadel Shana, and British media silence over the issue. This was published by Al Arab newspaper and Media Lens, and referred to by Press TV presenter Yvonne Ridley.
Press TV interviewed AMW adviser Guy Gabriel and the Guardian's assistant comments editor Joseph Harker, and AMW chairman Sharif Hikmat Nashashibi was interviewed by The Demon, the student newspaper of De Montfort University.
Dame Ann Leslie of the Daily Mail invited Sharif and AMW director Muna Nashashibi to the launch party of her memoir "Killing my own Snakes."
Egypt's Al Ahram Weekly published a commentary by AMW adviser Dr Ghada Karmi entitled "Breaking the Gaza siege."
AMW urged its Lebanese members and advisers to write to the Times regarding an article by Alice Fordham entitled "Bombs and Botox in Beirut."

AMW slams Israeli inaction over Reuters death, & British media silence Friday, August 15, 2008 (79 reads)

Arab Media Watch condemns the Israeli military's decision to take no action against a tank crew that killed Reuters cameraman Fadel Shana and wounded soundman Wafa Abu Mizyed in Gaza in April 2008. AMW joins the International Federation of Journalists, the Committee to Protect Journalists and other media watchdogs in calling for a full, independent inquiry.
AMW expresses concern that the investigation's decision has been almost completely ignored by the mainstream British press, the sole exception being Guardian correspondent Rory McCarthy. This is surprising given its life-threatening implications for all journalists reporting from the occupied Palestinian territories.

A travel documentary in Syria is being produced which will be aired on the "Travel" channel, and will focus mainly on culture and everyday lives of Syrians. The producers are looking for Syrians who speak fluent English, and who are willing to be in front of the camera, show Wright their favorite parts of their town and their favourite hang outs, and share a few activities.

During the week of 4-10 August 2008, the Middle East correspondent for a British national daily broadsheet responded positively to an email from AMW chairman Sharif Hikmat Nashashibi regarding an article about Hebron, and the Daily Mail responded positively to AMW adviser Chris Doyle's objections to the uses of the term 'Arab' in an article entitled "Arab sends his Lamborghini for an oil check - 6,500 miles by air from Qatar to London."
Al Jazeera English requested an interview with Nashashibi, who was interviewed on Press TV with the deputy business editor of the Sunday Express about such issues as Iraqi reconstruction and the effects of the US presidential elections on the Arab world.
AMW had a meeting with the Independent, and the Guardian expressed an interest in publishing an article by Nashashibi.

Friends of Mohammed Omer have reminded the Israeli ambassador, Ron Prosor, that they are still waiting after five weeks for an explanation of the vicious assault by Israeli security officers on the award-winning journalist as he returned home to his family in Gaza. Omer had been visiting European capitals after winning the Martha Gellhorn prize for journalism in war, which was presented to him in London.

During the week of 28 July - 3 August 2008, Arab Media Watch published a study entitled "British Media Reaction: Sudan's President & the ICC," and met with an author of a forthcoming book on Sudan.
The documentary "Inside Hamas" - which was aired earlier this year on Channel 4, and in which AMW chairman Sharif Hikmat Nashashibi was interviewed - has been shortlisted by the Grierson Trust for the Best Documentary Award. The Griersons are the top documentary awards in Britain.
AMW director Muna Nashashibi was interviewed on Al Hiwar TV about AMW and the role of Arab women in the West.
An Oxfam director told AMW he was leaving the organisation, adding: "I wanted to thank you - deeply and with admiration - for our encounters over recent years. I trust that Oxfam will continue to benefit from its association with you."
