On 2 October 2008, the Economist quoted Arab Media Watch adviser Nadim Shehadi in an article on Lebanon / Syria entitled "Jihadist blowback?"

He was quoted as saying: "Hariri has been paying jihadis not to be jihadis but they've been rebelling against him. You don't play Gandhi with a jihadi."
